2007 Preview
It might be somewhat easy for an outsider, or someone who doesn't follow Region 5-4A closely, to conclude that the Maplewood Panthers will fall back into the region pack following the graduation of perhaps the most-dynamic offensive and defensive players of 2006.

Although it is surely significant that running back Terrance Holt and linebacker Thomas Majors will not be on the roster in 2007, after all they were both unanimous all-state selections, it does not mean the Panthers are empty of talent and due for a letdown. What is means is other talented players will now be more in the spotlight at Maplewood High School.

Ralph Thompson has turned a program that was winless and lifeless four years ago into a consistent, serious contender for playoff position every year. His development of the vast athletic talent that always existed at Maplewood is commendable, and there is no doubt that this season's edition of the Panthers will be a formidable force on the field.

The center of attention on both sides of the ball will be senior quarterback/defensive back Chris Simpson. The dynamic Simpson may be the best overall athlete in the region. He threw for almost 1,000 yards last year while running for almost 800 more, accounting for 22 touchdowns overall. Yet he is a better defender, gaining first-team All-Region54a.com honors at the position last season and being tabbed on the first-team preseason this year.

The Panthers feature more individual players on the Region 5-4A.com preseason teams than any other squad on the region. That doesn't mean that Maplewood has the best team, but it does signal there is a lot of talent on the Panthers' roster.

Other top skill-position performers this year should include senior Dominique Howard and DeShawn Thorpe along with juniors Markus Cantrell and Qutavious Parks. Each of those players is fast and each should have a chance to influence the outcome of games.

The real strength of the Panthers might be on the line of scrimmage. Marcus Bowins, Lester Blanton, Jarmarvin Howard, Isiah Meneese, and Levi Williams are all preseason all-region picks, and if they all stay healthy the could lead a deep playoff run for this Maplewood team.

The schedule features tough non-region opponents Ooltewah and Pearl-Cohn, but the Panthers catch region foes Hillsboro, Tullahoma, and Stratford at home. A trip to Whites Creek is the toughest region road game, and the season-ending battle with Stratford could go along way in determining the Panthers' playoff fate.
