Now that the TSSAA has officially voted to align and classify schools for football based on the so-called Z-Plan, here appears to be what the future holds.
Following the 2008 season Region 5-4A will cease to exist. Current teams in Region 5-4A will be dispersed in various districts. Keep in mind that enrollment figures are not set and will not be set until the upcoming school year.
The new plan splits high school football into three classes - A, AA, and AAA. Each of those three classed will be split into two classes for the playoffs. 1A will include 1A and 2A, 2A will include 3A and 4A, and 3A will include 5A and 6A. Confused yet?
As of today with current enrollments, Tullahoma, Shelbyville, and Lawrence Co. will join Columbia, Lincoln Co., and Franklin Co. in District 8-AAA. The Wildcats, Eagles, and Wildcats will be 5A for the playoffs, while the other three will be 6A. It remains to be seen if Coffee Co., a participant in 8-AAA in all other sports, will be placed in 8-AAA for football or not.
Hillsboro will move to District 11 as a 5A team along with Centennial and Hillwood. Brentwood, Franklin, Independence, Overton, and Ravenwood will also be in 11-AAA as 6A teams.
Stratford, based on current enrollment, will move to District 11-AA. The Spartans will participate as a 4A team along with David Lipscomb, while CPA, East Literature, M.L. King, and Pearl-Cohn will be 3A.
Whites Creek and Maplewood will be in District 12-AAA. Both will be classified with Glencliff as 5A teams, while Antioch, Cane Ridge, Hunters Lane, and McGavock will be 6A.
